What is Cuil thinking?
No results for The Hindu or Deccan Herald. Plenty of results for Amithab Bacchan or Karishma Kapoor or even Asian Age.

I would find it quite difficult to use a search engine that does not find the kinds of pages I am looking for.

Update: It looks like you now find results for The Hindu and Deccan Herald. But their site is being slashdotted.

Did you deliberately spell the stars' names unconventionally? (My name returns a page on my PGP trust chains, and I've lost my private key, haha.)

Actually, I can't spell the names of most Bollywood stars. Never get to watch them or their antics much. It has been almost 2 years since I last watched a Hindi movie.

Possibly temporary?

Ah. Works for me too now. Must have been a temporary glitch.

Don't be so harsh on them. They just started and are competing against the best.

They are trying to be something different. Needs to be seen how relevant their results are. :)

True. It is very difficult to be great from day one. That said, if I were them, I would start very low key. It is better to start small, get converts and become bigger through word of mouth over a couple of years than to have Tech Crunch and popular media writing 'David v. Goliath' stories about you. For example, Google started low key and you did not see many Yahoo v. Google or Altavista v. Google stories. Google slowly proved itself and ate away the lead that other search engines had. The other search engines were also bloated like dead corpses at this point - many of them smoking the portal pipe.

Their search site is gone now and a "we're working on it page" is up! Not cuill :D

The pictures are a nice touch, but they are distracting when they are not relevant. They also seem to remain the same page after page - whereas the text results are changing. I was fooled into thinking that clicking on the next button got me nothing.

And what's with the completely irrelevant images?

Even I had pretty flaky experience.

One minute you find "0" results for a keyword and search back later, you get some results.
And while they claim to have an index bigger than Google I don't get any results for queries in unicode (try తెలుగు)

Maybe they are indeed experiencing the slashdotted/dugg/tech crunched effects.

I think their "0 results" thing is seriously broken and harmful to them in the medium to long term. "We are sorry, we are overloaded" is a more acceptable message to send out to users than "no results". With the former, a user can be expected to at least retry. With the latter, the user just goes away.

They're just broken, for the most part. They'll get better, I'm sure.

I am sure. But what I keep wondering is why they decided to launch when they are clearly unprepared.
