Origami flower left at Auschwitz by a visitor
I recently got the opportunity to visit the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps in Poland. Here are photos from my trip.

oh WOW. I somehow didn't realize Auschwitz was in Poland...of all the places I might have expected to appear, it was surely not this....I have visited the "killing fields" of Cambodia..but your images were still very powerful...feeling very stirred and sad now.

Auschwitz is a very powerful place. In some ways, it is better to not have visited such a place and imagine dark evil happening in far away other places. Visiting it reinforced for me the concept of banality of evil. How could such simple everyday places be put to such awful use?

There were two thinks that I saw that punched me in my stomach:

1. The claw marks still visible (but faded with age) on the walls of the gas chambers.

2. A grove of trees near the gas chambers. Sometimes the older men, women and children were made to wait in this grove of trees because the gas chamber was "occupied". Imagine that! Standing a 100 feet from the place where you are going to be killed in an hour or so!!
